There is a legend about a bird which sings just once in its life, more sweetly than any other creature on the face of the earth. From the moment it leaves the nest it searches for a thorn tree, and does not rest until it has found one. Then, singing among the savage branches, it impales itself upon the longest, sharpest spine. And, dying, it rises above its own agony to outcarol the lark and the nightingale. One superlative song, existence the price.
But the whole world stills to listen, and God in His heaven smiles. For the best is only bought at the cost of great pain....

Welcome to the LJ of the "Hip, Benedicting, Broom-Collecting Pagan" (as called by another LJ-er).
As a Benedictine, I try to follow the Rule of Benedict in my daily life. The first -- and arguably the most important -- word in the Benedictine Rule is, "Listen."
In my life, I try to listen. Sometimes that gets me into trouble. I need to remember that being willing to "listen" does not equate to being a doormat. I need to follow the advice given to me by boadiccea, a very wise woman:
"Listen to this crazy shit and learn that you don't need to listen to this crap ever again, from anybody."
I think it's advice from which we all could benefit.
